Meet Patience Filippo, a first-time children’s book author but a long-time artist, educator, and writer. Her debut work, My Teacher Is NOT an Octopus, is a vibrant collaboration with illustrator Jason Squadrito. Born from decades of classroom experience since the 1980s, this book launches the Nurture Learner Series.
Patience is passionate about encouraging life-long learning and finding common ground across cultural differences. Whether between student and teacher, adult and child, or peer to peer, her goal is to build a community rooted in kindness, generosity, and fun.
Introducing the "Choice Challenge".
My Teacher Is NOT an Octopus is more than a story; it is a self-regulation tool based on Patience’s affectionately named classroom strategy: the Choice Challenge. Moving away from labeling decisions that can internalize shame as "good" or "bad," this fresh perspective offers six specific choices that empower children and adults to make the *best* decisions for their behavior every day.
Children and grown-ups make choices constantly—about how to treat ourselves and others. Let’s stop settling for "okay" and start making the *best* choices together.

Business Background
Patience Filippo is an advocate, altruist, artist, and the first time author of My Teacher Is Not an Octopus with other titles to be released in the Nurture Learner Series. With degrees in elementary and early childhood education, she brings decades of classroom expertise to her writing, specializing in behavior management and cross-curricular interactive themes. Her experience spans full-time teaching, substitute instruction through high school, and supervising homeschool students. Currently, working on publishing subsequent series books.
Born in Brooklyn and raised from Atlantic Beach to upstate, Patience served eight years in the United States military. Today, her midwest office base includes a publishing company dedicated to bringing diverse stories to life. Plus, making book touring easier coast to coast. She hosts a creative arts studio and co-working hub. She is the founder of Peace Corner Community, a micro-nonprofit dedicated to alleviating food insecurity, supporting youth and children, veteran horticulture therapy, creative arts, plus little libraries, and promoting animal welfare.
Patience also assists other non-profits. Such as, the founding of a veteran non-profit where she maintains a board position and supports tasks like web design, cyber security, etc. For the community developed a veteran horticultural therapeutic gardening option. Animal therapy via the Hisses to Kisses initiative supporting feral-to-friend community cats for adoption. Working with Youth from groups like Zach Johnson Foundation's Kids on Course.
Patience maintains a midwest office to facilitate easy author visits, "butterfly touring" across the United States where she has a four quadrant approach to weave in family and friends, house signings like house concerts, and includes a Northeast publishing nook. For east coast visits with the illustrator to facilitate stops in the multi state area. She donates services to authors, entrepreneurs, and others digitally and in person. Is a popular book reviewer for authors and enjoyment.
Driven by her core belief, Patience is empowering happiness through literacy in every book she writes and every community served. Four keys: knowledge to understand wisdom for insight of choices.
